The GQT website is now fully operational. In the near future, it should be filled with activities.
September 1st, 2006 - Hessel Posthuma starts veni at Utrecht
Post-doc Hessel Posthuma is moving from Nijmegen to Utrecht on a veni innovational research grant from NWO. Hessel received his PhD from the UvA in 2003 and works on deformation quantization.
September 1st, 2006 - Klaas Slooten temporary UD at Utrecht
Klaas Slooten has started as a temporary lecturer/researcher at Utrecht. He did his PhD with Eric Opdam in Amsterdam and then went to Lyon. His specialisation is the theory of affine Hecke algebras, esp. the Springer correspondence.

September 15th, 2006 - Aanstelling Rainer Kaenders aan Radboud Universiteit
Rainer Kaenders heeft getekend voor een volledige baan aan het Instituut voor Leraar en School (ILS) van de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen waar hij al sinds vijf jaar in deeltijd werkt. Naast zijn huidige werk als vakdidacticus wiskunde zal hij vanaf 1 september de deelfunctie van 'hoofd onderwijs' op dit instituut invullen en één dag in de week het Nijmeegse steunpunt wiskunde D opbouwen.
Deze aanstelling is mede mogelijk gemaakt doordat GQT voor vier jaar de helft van Kaenders' aanstelling bekostigt.
October 3rd, 2006 - INTAS project : Singularities, Bifurcations and Monodromy started
on October 1st.
This project brings together research groups from Russia, Georgia, Poland, Germany, UK, France, Spain and The Netherlands. The research programme has many connections with the GQT-cluster. (Click on the header)
The Russian and Georgian researchers in the project get a salary extention during two years. There is also a fund for invitations of guests and travel money for the participants. Besides this INTAS project there exist already a related project on Russian-Dutch cooperation
Geometry and Singularity Theory in Mathematical Physics.

Het GQT cluster heeft met ondersteuning
van NWO (Exacte Wetenschappen) 4 plaatsen voor student-assistenten
per jaar beschikbaar , met ingang van 1 februari 2007.
Het doel is om getalenteerde studenten
enthousiast te maken voor een wetenschappelijke loopbaan. Het gaat
hierbij om Master studenten (mogelijk ook nog de laatste generatie
doctoraal studenten), die zullen worden ingezet in de keten:
Onderwijs --------- Studie ---------
Research
-mentor voor bachelor studenten
-mentor voor beginnende Master en Master Class studenten
-interactie met leerlingen in het voortgezet onderwijs
- PR- activiteiten van het cluster
en met name:
- participatie in onderzoeksprojectem
Voor elk van deze taken geldt een relatie (in ruime zin) met de expertise van het GQT-cluster.
Bij het onderwijs kan men deze studenten ook betrekken bij de ontwikkeling van modulen voor Wiskunde D of NL&T.
Het gaat om 4 student-assistenten per jaar. De inzet bedraagt in principe 0.2 fte per assistentschap (soms te splitsen in twee eenheden van 0.1). De verdeling over de clusterlocaties zal rekening houden met beschikbaarheid van talent en zal niet op elk moment hetzelfde hoeven te zijn. De aanstelling en verdeling van de plaatsen geschiedt onder verantwoording van de Directeur GQT Prof. dr. D. Siersma.

January 17th, 2007 - Erik van den Ban benoemd tot hoogleraar 'Lie Theorie'
Per 1 januari 2007 is Erik van den Ban aan de Universiteit Utrecht benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar in de 'Lie Theorie'. De benoemende instantie is het Utrechts Universiteitsfonds. Erik is hiermee de eerste nieuw benoemde hoogleraar in het GQT cluster. (DS)

June 21st, 2007 - 11 students received Certificate of Master Class Symplectic Geometry
The MRI-Master Class ceremony took place in the Academic building of Utrecht University. 11 students of the Master Class Symplectic Geometry and Beyond received their master Class Certificate from the Coordinator Marius Crainic. The supervisor of the test problems said some personal words.
This Master Class was possible by joint support of MRI and GQT (Nwo).
July 10th, 2007 - Marius Crainic obtained VIDI-grant
In the
2007 Call of the NWO-grant VIDI the proposal
on Poisson topology of Marius Crainic was succesfull.
The aim of the VIDI-project
is to develop the field of
"Poisson topology".
Poisson structures are mathematical structures underlying classical mechanics. Topology refers to aspects
based on the idea of "continuous movement". Poisson topology is expected to reveal new
phenomena and interesting applications.
The proposal will be
carried out at the Department
of Mathematics of Utrecht University.

September 6th, 2007 - GQT masterclass begint 10 september
Op 10 september zullen de eerste colleges beginnen in de GQT/MRI masterclass "Quantum groups, affine Lie algebras and their applications".
Naast een aantal Nederlandse studenten zullen 14 buitenlandse studenten deelnemen aan dit programma.
September 1st, 2007 - Dr Eric Koelink benoemd tot GQT hoogleraar in Nijmegen.
Erik Koelink is per 1 september 2007 benoemd tot hoogleraar Analyse, in het bijzonder in verband met meetkunde en kwantumtheorie. Dit is de eerste leerstoel, die met het GQT-clustergeld wordt gestart.
September 18th, 2007 - Kaenders hoogleraar in Keulen per 1 oktober
Dr. Rainer Kaenders wordt per 1 oktober hoogleraar in
Keulen, en zal Nijmegen dus verlaten. Zijn vertrek zal
worden opgeluisterd met een Wiskunde Onderwijs
middag op 27 september 2007 in
het Huygensgebouw van de Radboud Universiteit in
Nijmegen. Kaenders taak binnen het GQT-cluster betrof oa. de relatie met het voortgezet onderwijs
August 1st, 2007 - Jochum Heinloth new GQT-member in Amsterdam
On August 1, 2007 Jochum Heinloth started his work as new GQT member at the Korteweg de Vries Institute in Amsterdam. Jochum got his PhD in Bonn and worked also in Gottingen. His research interests are: Bundles on curves, Geometric Langlands-Correspondence and Stacks
The creation of this position was made possible through the support of NWO
October 1st, 2007 - Andre Henriques new GQT-member in Utrecht
On October 1 Andre Henriques started his work as GQT-member at the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University. He studied in Geneva, Berkeley and MIT and was postdoc in Munster.
He has a wide research interest, here are a few keywords: categories, cluster algebras, conformal field theory, elliptic cohomology, Equivariant, K-theory, Lie groups, operads, orbifolds, sheaves, simplicial, spectral sequences, supermanifolds, up-to-homotopy, von Neumann algebras.
The creation of this position was made possible through the support of NWO.
October 15th, 2007 - Gunther Cornelissen benoemd tot GQT-hoogleraar in Utrecht
Per 1 october 2007 is Gunther Cornelissen benoemd tot hoogleraar Mathematische Fysica (grensgebied mathematische fysica en arithmetische meetkunde) aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Het betreft een benoeming tot profileringshoogleraar met toegespitste leeropdracht in onderzoek.
Het is de tweede leerstoel die met het GQT-clustergeld wordt gerealiseerd.

Gunther Cornelissen heeft een VICI toegekend gekregen op zijn project
A tale of two geometries
Er wordt een verband gelegd tussen twee soorten meetkunde: aan de ene kant de meetkunde achter de getaltheorie, aan de andere kant de meetkunde achter de ,quantummechanica. Door quantummechanisch te 'luisteren' naar getaltheoretische objecten wordt een fijnere structuur onthuld dan vroeger mogelijk was.
Een Vici-subsidie van NWO is bestemd voor voor senior-onderzoekers om een eigen onderzoeksgroep op te bouwen voor maximaal 1.250.000 Euro.
April 7th, 2008 - The GQT Student Prize
The GQT student prize of one thousand Euro for 2007 has been won by Roland van der Veen with his MSc-thesis The Volume Conjecture for Whitehead Chains, which will lead to a publication in the proceedings of the International Conference on Quantum Topology, Hanoi 2007. The jury was impressed by the nice introduction, the helpful comments throughout, the pictures and the originality of the work.

August 5th, 2008 - Sergey Shadrin obtained VIDI-grant.
Project title: The Moduli Space of Curves

Two-dimensional surfaces (like sphere, torus, surface of pretzel) with algebraic structure on them form highly non-trivial geometric objects, especially important in modern mathematical physics. We study them using a variety of methods coming from quantum theory and topology.

Het Standaard Model van de elementaire deeltjes geeft een zeer nauwkeurige beschrijving van de kleinste bouwstenen van ons universum. Dit project heeft als doel de wiskundige structuur van het model te ontrafelen met behulp van een nieuw soort meetkunde.
August 5th, 2008 - Remke Kloosterman obtained VENI
Projectnaam: Krommen met veel punten
Dr. R.N. (Remke) Kloosterman (m) 05-03-1978, UU - Wiskunde ,
Elliptische krommen zijn krommen met extra structuur. Onbekend is of elliptische krommen met veel `speciale' punten bestaan. In dit project worden families van elliptische krommen onderzocht, om vast te stellen of zulke krommen bestaan. Deze krommen hebben toepassingen in bijvoorbeeld de cryptografie.
September 1st, 2008 - Erik van den Ban starts as new GQT-director
Dirk Siersma became emeritus and resigned as GQT-director on september 1. His successor is Erik van den Ban from Utrecht University.

October 1st, 2008 - Gert Heckman new member GQT board
Having been a member of the board from the start of the GQT cluster,
Joseph Steenbrink from the Radboud University, Nijmegen, resigned from
the board on October 1, 2008. His successor is Gert Heckman, from the
Radboud University.
September 26th, 2008 - Marius Crainic wins Andre Lichnerowicz Prize
On July 7, Marius Crainic and Henryk Burztyn were the first recipients
of the Andre Lichnerowicz Prize at the international conference Poisson 2008, Lausanne.
This prize will be awarded every two years for important work by young
researchers in the area of Poisson Geometry.
February 6th, 2009 - Martijn Caspers wins GQT student prize
At the GQT colloquium of February 6, Martijn Caspers has been awarded the GQT student prize for the best Master thesis written on a GQT related subject in the academic year 2007/2008.
His thesis: Gelfand spectra of C*-algebras in topos theory, written under the supervision of Prof. N.P. Landsman, is now available.
March 4th, 2009 - ESF-network approved
the European Science Foundation has approved of the ESF Research Network entitled "Interactions of Low-Dimensional Topology and Geometry with Mathematical Physics (ITGP)". For The Netherlands, the members of GQT take part in this network. The network will fund workshops, conferences and staff exchange between the nodes.

May 6th, 2009 - N. Reshetikin GQT hoogleraar in Amsterdam
Met ingang van 1 januari 2009 is Prof. dr. N. Reshetikhin aangesteld als hoogleraar Mathematische Fysica aan het Korteweg-De Vries instituut voor wiskunde van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Het betreft een aanstelling in vaste dienst voor 9/38ste van de volledige werktijd, die mede door het cluster Geometry and Quantum Theory wordt gefinancierd.
September 1st, 2009 - Gunther Cornelissen new member GQT board.
Eduard Looijenga (University of Utrecht), who has been a member of the board since
the start of the GQT cluster, resigned from the board by September 1, 2009.
His successor is Gunther Cornelissen of the University of Utrecht.
December 11th, 2009 - Bas Fagginger Auer wins GQT student prize
At the GQT colloquium of December 11, Bas Fagginger Auer has been awarded the
GQT student prize for the best Master thesis written on a GQT related subject in
the academic year 2008/2009. His thesis: Spatially Homogeneous Universes,
written under the supervision of Prof.Dr. R. Loll (UU, Theoretical Physics)
is now available.
January 22nd, 2010 - T. Hausel GQT-guestprofessor (update)
T. Hausel (Oxford) will be GQT-guestprofessor in Amsterdam from March 27 to April 17.

May 11th, 2010 - G. Felder GQT guest professor, 8/6-3/7, 2010
Giovanni Felder from ETH in Zurich will be the guest of the Mathematics Department of the Radboud University Nijmegen from June 8 until July 3 of this year, as visiting GQT-professor.
He will give a general colloquium lecture on
This lecture is intended for a general mathematical audience.
There will be two days of lectures the week before the GQT-conference. On both of these days we intend to have dinner in town with the speakers and the audience of the lectures. If you are interested, please join us.
March 19th, 2010 - GQT-member Hans Duistermaat suddenly passed away
GQT is very sad to report that its distinguished member, emeritus professor of Pure and Applied Mathematics at Utrecht University, emeritus academy-professor of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Prof Dr J.J. (Hans) Duistermaat, suddenly passed away on March 19.

November 25th, 2010 - Jochen Heinloth obtains Vidi grant
GQT member Jochen Heinloth has obtained a Vidi grant for his proposal Parameter spaces in the geometric Langlands programme.
The proposed research will be carried out at the University of Amsterdam.
Abstract: Parameter spaces for geometric objects always have an especially fine structure in the most symmetrical objects. In this research, Heinloth investigates this fine structure to find new clues for the Langlands conjecture that postulates a mysterious connection between arithmetic and analytic properties.

December 10th, 2010 - Sebastian Klein wins GQT-student prize
At the GQT colloquium of December 10, Sebastian Klein has been awarded the
GQT student prize for the best Master thesis written on a GQT related subject in
the academic year 2009/2010. His thesis: Reconstructive Geometry in certain Triangulated Categories,
written under the supervision of Prof.dr. Gunther Cornelissen (UU)
is now available.
October 29th, 2010 - Eric Opdam obtains ERC Advanced Grant
With this grant from the European Research Council (ERC) Opdam (University of Amsterdam) plans to
develop new techniques to analyse the so-called
Langlands correspondence.
The research will be conducted in close collaboration with Bernhard Kroetz (co-principal investigator) from the University of Hannover.
March 1st, 2011 - C. Teleman GQT visiting professor 15/5 - 15/6, 2011
Constantin Teleman (Berkeley) will be guest of the Mathematical Institute
of the University of Utrecht as GQT visiting professor.
In the period May 15 - June 15, he will give a series of lectures,
which will be announced soon.
September 5th, 2011 - Wiskundeclusters twee jaar gecontinueerd
Voor behoud excellent onderzoek en internationale positie
De vier wiskundeclusters krijgen, met ingang van het huidige academische jaar, elk 1 miljoen euro van het gebiedsbestuur NWO Exacte Wetenschappen voor een periode van twee jaar. Dit besluit is onder meer gebaseerd op het oordeel van een internationale evaluatiecommissie. De krachtenbundeling via de clusters is een effectieve en efficiente manier gebleken om het wiskundig onderzoek en onderwijs te organiseren. Hierdoor is de Nederlandse wiskunde internationaal goed op peil gebleven. Continuering van de clusters is een van de ambities uit het Masterplan Toekomst Wiskunde.
De internationale commissie bestempelt het niveau van het onderzoek in de clusters als excellent tot zelfs exemplarisch. Het evaluatierapport van de commissie, onder voorzitterschap van professor Frank van der Duyn Schouten, is aangeboden aan de ministeries van OCW en EL&I.

All GQT members are invited to submit research proposals.

October 19th, 2011 - GQT student prize: deadline Nov. 1, 2011.
The student prize of 1000 Euro is awarded for
the best master thesis in the area of
geometry and quantum theory written between August 1, 2010
and October 1, 2011.
The objective of the prize is to attract students to
this beautiful area and to stimulate them to produce high
level work in preparation for Ph.D. research in this area
within the cluster or elsewhere.
It is very important sufficiently many theses will be submitted!
Please take some time to think if you know of theses
that qualify.

Dr. Guido Carlet (the University of Milan) is visiting the University of Amsterdam from October 24 till October 28, 2011. His visit is partly supported by the GQT cluster.
October 28th, 2011 - M. Mulase GQT visitor at UvA 27 Nov - 3 Dec
Prof. Motohico Mulase (UC Davis) is visiting the University of Amsterdam from November 27 till December 3, 2011. His visit is partly supported by the GQT cluster. November 8th, 2011 - J. Tomiyama visitor in Leiden, November 10-18
Prof. Jun Tomiyama (Tokyo Metropolitan University) is visiting Leiden University from November 10 through November 18, 2011. His visit is partly supported by the GQT cluster.
